Modern Hawaiian Home Channels Japanese Architecture on the Lush Island of Kauai

Pocketing windows and doors open to a covered lanai, a pool, and ocean and mountain views

This Japanese-inspired modern house is one of nearly 200 completed homes in the upscale 1,010-acre Kukuiula community on the South Shore of the lush Hawaiian island of Kauai.

The owners have lived and worked in Japan and other parts of Asia and wanted to create a home that reflected that history, said listing agent Hannah Sirois, of Corcoran Pacific Properties. “In my view, it truly is an East meets West home.”

“You arrive by a lengthy driveway and approach the front door through a traditional Japanese garden,” she said. The custom front door, which has a chrysanthemum as its centerpiece, is the “focal point of the garden.”

From the entry foyer, you step into a great room that “is warm and inviting, with lots of color and many custom elements,” Ms. Sirois said. “It showcases the coastal Pacific views, the white water views.”

Many of the windows and doors in the 2018 home pocket away completely to open the home to the covered lanai and the water, mountain and golf course views.

“All of the doors and windows are custom,” made by the Italian company Albertini and then shipped to Kauai, Ms. Sirois said. The hand-scraped wood floors throughout are made of Brazilian Jatoba, and all of the sliding doors in the home are Douglas fir.

The floor plan is designed to accommodate family and guests, with the primary bedroom suite in a separate wing. It features a southwest-facing lanai and a lush outdoor shower.

Except for an upstairs study, which has nearly 360-degree views, the house is on one level. There is a second study on the main level.

“The property is all about privacy,” Ms. Sirois said, with a stone and wood fence in the front and extensive landscaping around the backyard pool.

Stats

The 4,490-square-foot house has four bedrooms, four full bathrooms and one partial bathroom. It sits on a 35,937-square-foot lot. There is also a 1,500-square-foot covered lanai.

Amenities

Along with the ocean and mountain views, amenities include a heated swimming pool, zoned air conditioning, a two-car garage, Lutron lighting, a hidden Japanese garden, a flat lawn, a covered lanai, two studies and extensive landscaping with indigenous plants.

Community amenities include a clubhouse with dining, 10 acres of organic gardens, swimming pools, an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf golf course and golf clubhouse, a 32-foot Yellowfin boat, a spa and fitness center, and tennis courts.

The home, which is in Kukuiula’s Kahalawai neighborhood, is within easy walking distance of the clubhouse and the beach, according to the listing.

The South Shore of the island is known for its great beaches, and there are other small towns within a 15 to 20 minute’s drive.
